As far back as I can remember, law has been a part of my life. I was raised in a Detroit neighborhood called Copper Canyon. Copper Canyon was the area of Detroit the police officers, firefighters, and other city workers with residency requirements raised their families. They were all hardworking service-oriented people who watched out for each other. It was a great place to grow up.
My father was a hard-nosed Detroit homicide detective. We would spend hours discussing politics and law. He taught me the world we live in is not black and white. There are varying shades of grey and everyone has their own view and story to tell. I learned the significance of attentive listening, the value of taking responsibility, and the necessity for everyone to look out for one another.
Active listening is a crucial skill to being an estate planning attorney. Many clients do not know what they need. It is my job to listen, understand their goals, uncover any unique family dynamics, and craft a plan to meet their specific needs.
It is cliché to say, “if you love what you are doing, it does not feel like work,” but it is true for me. I began as a paralegal at age 19. By age 21, I found myself in a prominent role at a large Detroit law firm assisting the steering committee of a $100 million Superfund site. While in this role, I was swept off my feet by my soon to be husband, William.
For the next 20 years, I continued to work as a paralegal in environmental, toxic tort, and commercial litigation while raising our three children. I had always planned to become a lawyer, but as you get older making such a life-changing decision becomes more and more difficult. I could not let go of my dream and with the encouragement of William and my kids, I decided to take this huge step. I started law school on my 39th birthday.
While in law school, I realized that I much preferred helping families and not representing corporations. I began the next chapter of my life as an estate planning attorney. For the last 10 years I have been blessed in a career that brings me immense personal satisfaction. I rose to the level of partner at a midsize estate planning firm before starting my own firm almost four years ago. I am excited to bring my team to Blue Chip Estate Planning,
Being a part of the Blue Chip family of companies, I find myself with that same sense of community that I had while growing up in Copper Cannon. I am surrounded by hard working people that are willing to go the extra mile to help each other and provide excellent service to our clients." -Kimberly Crank Browning
